Benjamin Touama is a prominent figure in the Visual Kei scene, a musical and fashion genre originating from Japan. Universo Japanese Music: I’m going to start the interview with a question that I always like to know (as do many fans): why did you want to become an artist?

Benjamin Touama: I wanted to listen to a lot of classical, Japanese rock / metal music, it gave me ideas and I wanted to create my own music. To make the world travel in my musical universe.

Universo Japanese Music: I saw that you are a fan of Japanese music. You would like to know how you got to know this world and if it directly influenced your career. And how would it have influenced?

Benjamin Touama: I discovered Japanese music thanks to a friend who introduced me to several groups (Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois). I wanted to discover more artists who influenced me, Cross Vein, Dragon Guardian, Versailles etc …

Universo Japanese Music: How is the Visual Kei scene in your hometown?

Benjamin Touama: Living in France, the visual kei scene is not known, it’s a musical style with a small audience it’s pity .

Universo Japanese Music: You are the leader of the musical project Tales Of Vates. Right? How did the project start?

Benjamin Touama: Tales Of Vates is an instrumental musical project, I am the head of the musical project, I take care of the composition of the songs by making demos and albums there but for the lives if possible I prefer to do them with musicians. The project was born from playing video games (RPG) by listening to OSTs and also by listening to Japanese rock metal music.

Universo Japanese Music: How is the current status of Tales Of Vates? Are you writing new songs, for example?

Benjamin Touama: Currently I am trying to make discover as much as possible internationally the music that I have composed (demo chapter 1-2-extra and album chapter 3 fantasia). I see to realize new song but it is not the current priority.

Universo Japanese Music: In addition to Tales of Vates, are you part of other musical projects or bands?

Benjamin Touama: No, I don’t play in other projects, but I collaborate occasionally with other artists if they want me to record the guitar for them.
